The very fact that you are reading this website shows that you are concerned about the impact of 13 billion plastic bags being given away by retailers each year, 8 billion of which end up in landfill. Each bag is used on average for 20 minutes but takes 400 years to biodegrade in the ground.

Although reducing the use of plastic bags is fantastic, a switch to paper may have greater environmental impacts. Whilst paper is derived from a renewable source, the manufacturing process uses considerable quantities of oil for the extraction of raw material, wood pulping and transportation. Paper bags are heavier than plastic, require more transport energy and so create more emissions.

The Government is working with retailers to phase out all single use bags, not just plastic. We understand that a tax on the use of plastic bags has been ruled out. A Bill outlining new regulations to BAN THE USE OF ALL PLASTIC BAGS IN SUPERMARKETS AND OTHER RETAIL OUTLETS, is expected to be introduced in the House of Commons next year, to become law in early 2009. Many towns are now working towards becoming a carrier bag free zone. The important message we are putting forward at Go Natural 4 Bags is therefore: "REMEMBER BAGS, REUSE, REPLACE AND GO NATURAL"
